“Old Testament” Women in the New Testament
Eve
2 Corinthians (Pauline letter) 11:2 I feel a divine jealousy for you, for I promised you in marriage to one husband, to present you as a chaste virgin to Christ. 11:3 But I am afraid that as the serpent deceived Eve by its cunning, your thoughts will be led astray from a sincere and pure devotion to Christ.
1 Timothy (Pastoral Epistle) 2:8 I desire, then, that in every place the men should pray, lifting up holy hands without anger or argument; 2:9 also that the women should dress themselves modestly and decently in suitable clothing, not with their hair braided, or with gold, pearls, or expensive clothes, 2:10 but with good works, as is proper for women who profess reverence for God. 2:11 Let a woman learn in silence with full submission. 2:12 I permit no woman to teach or to have authority over a man; she is to keep silent. 2:13 For Adam was formed first, then Eve; 2:14 and Adam was not deceived, but the woman was deceived and became a transgressor. 2:15 Yet she will be saved through childbearing, provided they continue in faith and love and holiness, with modesty.
Sarah and Hagar
Romans (Pauline letter) 4:13 For the promise that he would inherit the world did not come to Abraham or to his descendants through the law but through the righteousness of faith. 4:14 If it is the adherents of the law who are to be the heirs, faith is null and the promise is void. 4:15 For the law brings wrath; but where there is no law, neither is there violation. 4:16 For this reason it depends on faith, in order that the promise may rest on grace and be guaranteed to all his descendants, not only to the adherents of the law but also to those who share the faith of Abraham (for he is the father of all of us, 4:17 as it is written, "I have made you the father of many nations") --in the presence of the God in whom he believed, who gives life to the dead and calls into existence the things that do not exist. 4:18 Hoping against hope, [Abraham] believed that he would become "the father of many nations," according to what was said, "So numerous shall your descendants be." 4:19 He did not weaken in faith when he considered his own body, which was already as good as dead (for he was about a hundred years old), or when he considered the barrenness of Sarah's womb. 4:20 No distrust made him waver concerning the promise of God, but he grew strong in his faith as he gave glory to God.
Romans 9:6 For not all Israelites truly belong to Israel, 9:7 and not all of Abraham's children are his true descendants; but "It is through Isaac that descendants shall be named for you." 9:8 This means that it is not the children of the flesh who are the children of God, but the children of the promise are counted as descendants. 9:9 For this is what the promise said, "About this time I will return and Sarah shall have a son." 9:10 Nor is that all; something similar happened to Rebecca when she had conceived children by one husband, our ancestor Isaac. 9:11 Even before they had been born or had done anything good or bad (so that God's purpose of election might continue, 9:12 not by works but by his call) she was told, "The elder shall serve the younger." 9:13 As it is written, "I have loved Jacob, but I have hated Esau." 9:14 What then are we to say? Is there injustice on God's part? By no means! 9:15 For he says to Moses, "I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion."
Galatians (Pauline letter) 4:21 Tell me, you who desire to be subject to the law, will you not listen to the law? 4:22 For it is written that Abraham had two sons, one by a slave woman and the other by a free woman. 4:23 One, the child of the slave, was born according to the flesh; the other, the child of the free woman, was born through the promise. 4:24 Now this is an allegory: these women are two covenants. One woman, in fact, is Hagar, from Mount Sinai, bearing children for slavery. 4:25 Now Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia and corresponds to the present Jerusalem, for she is in slavery with her children. 4:26 But the other woman corresponds to the Jerusalem above; she is free, and she is our mother. 4:27 For it is written, "Rejoice, you childless one, you who bear no children, burst into song and shout, you who endure no birthpangs; for the children of the desolate woman are more numerous than the children of the one who is married."
1 Peter (Catholic epistle) 3:1 Wives accept the authority of your husbands, so that, even if some of them do not obey the word, they may be won over without a word by their wives' conduct, 3:2 when they see the purity and reverence of your lives. 3:3 Do not adorn yourselves outwardly by braiding your hair, and by wearing gold ornaments or fine clothing; 3:4 rather, let your adornment be the inner self with the lasting beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious in God's sight. 3:6 Thus Sarah obeyed Abraham and called him lord. You have become her daughters as long as you do what is good and never let fears alarm you.
Tamar and Ruth
Matthew (One of the three Synoptic Gospels) 1:1 An account of the genealogy of Jesus the Messiah, the son of David, the son of Abraham. 1:2 Abraham was the father of Isaac, and Isaac the father of Jacob, and Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers, 1:3 and Judah the father of Perez and Zerah by Tamar, and Perez the father of Hezron, and Hezron the father of Aram, 1:4 and Aram the father of Aminadab, and Aminadab the father of Nahshon, and Nahshon the father of Salmon, 1:5 and Salmon the father of Boaz by Rahab, and Boaz the father of Obed by Ruth, and Obed the father of Jesse, 1:6 and Jesse the father of King David. And David was the father of Solomon by the wife of Uriah, 1:7 and Solomon the father of Rehoboam, and Rehoboam the father of Abijah, and Abijah the father of Asaph, 1:8 and Asaph the father of Jehoshaphat, and Jehoshaphat the father of Joram, and Joram the father of Uzziah, 1:9 and Uzziah the father of Jotham, and Jotham the father of Ahaz, and Ahaz the father of Hezekiah, 1:10 and Hezekiah the father of Manasseh, and Manasseh the father of Amos, and Amos the father of Josiah, 1:11 and Josiah the father of Jechoniah and his brothers, at the time of the deportation to Babylon. 1:12 And after the deportation to Babylon: Jechoniah was the father of Salathiel, and Salathiel the father of Zerubbabel, 1:13 and Zerubbabel the father of Abiud, and Abiud the father of Eliakim, and Eliakim the father of Azor, 1:14 and Azor the father of Zadok, and Zadok the father of Achim, and Achim the father of Eliud, 1:15 and Eliud the father of Eleazar, and Eleazar the father of Matthan, and Matthan the father of Jacob, 1:16 and Jacob the father of Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom Jesus was born, who is called the Messiah. 1:17 So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; and from David to the deportation to Babylon, fourteen generations; and from the deportation to Babylon to the Messiah, fourteen generations.
Jezebel
Revelation (the only NT apocalypse; by John of Patmos) 2:20 But I have this against you: you tolerate that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophet and is teaching and beguiling my servants to practice fornication and to eat food sacrificed to idols. 2:21 I gave her time to repent, but she refuses to repent of her fornication. 2:22 Beware, I am throwing her on a bed, and those who commit adultery with her I am throwing into great distress, unless they repent of her doings; 2:23 and I will strike her children dead…
